In a surprise move, software giant Microsoft has started selling computers and third-party software via its online store, a CNet news report said today. It’s part of a broader push to try to give Windows the kind of lift that Apple has gotten from its network of retail stores, the report added.

Computer makers hoping for Microsoft Corp’s new Windows 7 operating system to free up a long-awaited corporate spending spree may have to wait until the second half of next year. As the world’s top software maker prepared for its biggest product launch in a decade on Thursday, analysts said PC vendors already stood to benefit from a hardware refresh cycle next year. Microsoft’s new, supposedly more stable platform should serve as further impetus to upgrade aging machines.

Gartner, Inc. analysts today highlighted the top 10 technologies and trends that will be strategic for most organizations in 2010. The analysts presented their findings during Gartner Symposium/ITxpo, being held here through October 22. Gartner defines a strategic technology as one with the potential for significant impact on the enterprise in the next three years. Factors that denote significant impact include a high potential for disruption to IT or the business, the need for a major dollar investment, or the risk of being late to adopt.

Millions of servers around the world are doing little more than wasting energy, according to a new study. At least 15 percent of servers are not doing anything useful, said a majority (72 percent) of server managers polled by Kelton Research. In addition, 83 percent said they don’t have an adequate grasp of server utilization, and 72 percent rely on CPU utilization as their measure of server efficiency.
